Special Olympics Mississippi helps fill a vital role in the health of our athletes through the Healthy Athletes program, which is dedicated to providing health services and education to Special Olympics athletes and changing the way health systems interact with people with intellectual disabilities.
Despite severe need and high health risks, people with intellectual disabilities are denied health services, have limited access to community health interventions, and experience a lack of targeted health interventions and programs (World Health Organization, 2011).
Special Olympics Mississippi is working to strengthen the training and competitive experience of each athlete by promoting inclusive and healthy communities. The goal is to create an environment of dignity, while supporting the athlete’s health, fitness and quality of life.
We work with medical providers throughout the state to provide overall health screenings, hearing tests, eye exams, dental checkups and referrals at its statewide Summer and Fall games.
Strive is a fitness assessment tool that is easily implemented to test Special Olympics athletes’ current state of physical fitness. Designed with and validated by exercise science professionals, Strive provides baseline measurements of fitness and can be used to regularly monitor progress or improvement in performance of our athletes, while reinforcing the goal to become more fit.
